The Science Teachers' Recourse Page

What will you find on this page?

On this page, you will find the standards and classroom resources necessary for science instructions. All are in one location. Listed below are the national, state and local standards. All listed by grade level. The national and state standards and MPS’s Curriculum Frame Work are in PDF format. The Alabama Course of study is also in Microsoft Word so the teacher can add personal teaching notes for lessons and activities.

Safety is an issue in the science classroom when conducting experiments. A “Science Experiment Safety Rules” poster has been created for teachers to use. Click on the link below to download the poster in PDF format. The poster is on four pages. Trim the right and top edges of each sheet. Overlap the sheets, then tape on the back. Then laminate for strength and durability.

Using Trade Books in Science

Why Use Trade Books?

There is a big emphasis on getting students actively involved in reading and teachers are encouraged to incorporate reading into all content areas. Therefore, this section of our site is devoted to science trade books.

Science trade books can be a vehicle to introduce students to science concepts or a valuable complement to those concepts and skills already taught. They can enhance and broaden the students’ scope of topical understanding and to further scientific inquiry. Think of trade books as tools to improve reading skills, develop knowledge of scientific principles, explain abstract science principles and unclear textbook explanations, develop thinking skills, and enhance general knowledge. Literature provides for a richer, more meaningful understanding of subject matter because a story line can hook a child interest. As a result, it can provide a relevant way to introduce students to the pleasures and rewards of reading.

Every year, the National Science Teachers Associations (NSTA) and the Children’s Book Council (CBC) publishes the “Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children” list. Books are evaluated by science educators, experts in science education, and librarians. Books are evaluated on correct science information, interesting story line and relevant children’s content. This list is published yearly by NSTA and can be found at www.nsta.org/ostbc
